Short-Term Running Goals:

It's been a challenging year so far since Boston 2011.  When I got home from Boston my world changed when I found out I had some pretty severe food allergies. Since being tested I have been focused on building my health back up which has been a long slow process. What a difference it's made and I feel extremely blessed. For years I knew something was wrong and it's amazing to finally know that food can actually be a persons medicine to live a healthy life. 

Long-Term Running Goals:

I'm hoping to start building more miles when I can and be injury free.  Maybe one of these days I'll be fast. Just for now I'm just very happy to be running.

Personal:

Happily married to Marlin Ordway. We've got 4 grown children between the two of us.  It's been fun watching them go through life - making mistakes and picking themselves back up.  I love seeming them happy and succeeding.

I didn't plan on doing the 9 miles when I started. Last 1 1/2 miles were alittle hard. But, I was able to maintain my pace.

Thank you! I'm glad I happened upon this site. It's going to be a new experience. My husband I workout at the gym right now. Lately we go later in the day after work. More crowded, but have more time. We used to go early mornings. I'm sure we've seen you there. Can't wait to get outside more!

We're running our first marathon the first of June. Any advice is very welcome!!! I just want to be prepared.

Over the weekend I actually found a training schedule that I am going to follow the best I can.  I wonder how it'll go on the days I feel like running further than it says or days where I feel like running less. I'm also planning on cross training and will be adding that to running. I really am hoping not to have to cut back on miles run each week.  Today I did the 6 miles like the schedule said.  Not a bad run.  Felt pretty good since I had the weekend off.  Stayed at an 8:30 mm.

Hmmmm Mauri..I'm not an expert but if you always run 8:30 pace...try doing a slower run one day..you would feel more rested and could bump up the pace the next run after that. :D That is the simplest way...It's hard for runners to run "slow" but it is a good training practice. Unless you already feel you are running at low effort..then I say..you need a kick in th pants! ;)

Ok, did 8 miles today.  Tough day.  Still pretty cold to run outside so went to the gym and ran on the tm.  Couldn't get in a grove until mile 6.  I didn't feel to great and not alot of energy.  It was just one of those days and I hope tomorrows better!

I just keep trying. I'm trying a few different things trying to figure out what works. Cut out soda & sugar. Didn't eat or drink much anyway, but seeing if it helps. I really think I need hills or stairs at the football stadium. Might cut back miles for more cross training. Just a thought.

Don't cut back on the calories too much in marathon training, you need the fuel. My experience and those of whom I help train is that when your mileage increases, the extra weight falls off by itself. You need to fuel right to help your body handle the increased volume of running.

Trying to eat better. Didn't eat bad before, but trying to pay even more attention to what I eat now. I'll make sure & not to cut back. Might need to increase some because I tend to not eat enough sometimes. I really appreciate your advice!

Another day.  Much better than yesterday.   Went to gym.  6 miles 53.37.  Thinking about finding some hills or the stairs.  Plan on running outside over the weekend. Don't know why having such a hard time this winter getting out. Used to run around the river before they even had a greenbelt.

Winter running can get very old, many of us are sick of it and feeling it!!

Last summer I didn't think I was any faster outside - maybe even slower. My downfall has been not doing speed work mostly. I look at everyone's paces and wonder how they do it. I'm trying a couple of different things - like no sugar and soda. I'm going to work on more hill work. How do you do it?

You are not alone, I wonder the same thing every day!!! There are some super speedy people around here.

I am so slow on a treadmill, I just can not do the same speeds on them no matter how hard I try.

A smart increase in your base mileage will lead to improved speed naturally. Once you can run higher mileage you can add some speed work to help with pace and efficiency. Running is full of plateau's, you just have to keep working to reach the next one without going into injury territory.

Winter running IS GETTING OLD...we just need some warm weather to get motivated!

I like doing at least 35 miles/wk. For the last year or so I've mainly just ran. My husband and I have a couple of routes we do. We live in the country west of town and there aren't alot of hills. I'm going to try and make sure I get more overall training added into what I already do.

I used to cross train a lot and I think it worked great for me. I had the best spring ever last year, and I was doing less running and more aerobics and kickboxing and weight training. I hurt my foot in May and now whenever I do the other stuff it hurts, so all I do is run and weight train. I miss my cross training!

Trying to stick with the schedule I have for training.  Today said a rest day but I thought I'd switch and try and take tomorrow off.  Schedule said 4 miles. It drives me nuts to just do 4, so after the 4 at 8:34 pace I walked a fast pace on the tm at an incline of 4.0/4.5.  After 1/2 miles I decided to run another 1/2 with the incline at 4.0 to see how it felt.  Then did the ellipicial for 20 min & then bike (set for hills) for 30 min.  Felt much better and felt like I had a good workout.  Tomorrow should offically be Rest day and will try and avoid the gym.  But, we'll see what happens.   Might venture outside for a  short run after work.

Decided to go to the gym this afternoon after going to a movie. Did 5 miles- pretty easy run. Did yoga again afterwords. Am liking the varity and stretching.  I was so excited  - daughter's ran her first full mile!

Very nice run outside today.  Did the 5 mile loop. Chilly at first, but ended up taking top layer off after awhile.  Each time I ran a hill I turned around and ran it again. And if Isaw a hill somewhere I went and ran up. So, not sure how much Idid extra past the 5 miles.

Tomorrow I might just do the yoga & then the power cut class at the gym.

Thanks! I've got two training schedules I'm trying to gauge my runs by. The schedule I'm using has speedwork 3wks from now. The next few weeks miles average 30 - 35 miles for the week. It suggest 3 Rest/xt days each week. Suppost to have along run of 14 miles on Sat. Don't know if I can do it, but I'll try!

Really enjoyed my run today. 6 miles. Had been up late the night before so dreaded working out during the day.  But, once I got to the gym was glad to be there. Great day today. Ran 16 miles.  Furthest to date!  Overall, it went pretty well. Felt pretty good. Ran around the local Greenbelt.  Started to get tired the last couple of miles.   Amazing how much easier it is when you don't think of how far you've gone or how much further you've got to go.  Forgot my watch so don't know exact time, but I was happy with what I did.  Took alittle longer than my husband.  One of these day's I'm going to catch up and pass him!  

I actually went into work after running. Finishing up some end of month things.  I've never worked on a Sunday.  Thought I'd only be there a couple of hours.  But, ended up being there almost 8 hrs! Bad part was I didn't eat as well as I should have after a run like today. 

Changed my work schedule to try and get two runs in each day. But, tomorrow I think I'll just do one run.  I'm alittle tired.

Ran 6 miles today after work.  Started out pretty good but got tired towards the end.  Either from yesterdays run and then working til 7pm. I've never had to work that late or a Sunday!  Or from not being able to sleep to well last night.   For some reason I woke up at 2:45am wide awake.  Stayed up about for 30-45 minutes.Was sleeping pretty well until husband came back from his morning run and started flipping the light on at 5:30.  Must have thought it was time for me to wake up.

Tomorrows another day!  Plan on doing another 6.

Great training. The increased mileage is probably impacting you, but take your day off and listen to your body so you don't get injured. The build up in mileage will pay off, just don't push the distance and pace at the same time.

I've just noticed when I run twice in a day it's taking me longer to recover and I notice it in my next run. Marlin and I were talking about heart rates and at a 8:30 pace his heart rate is much lower than mine. It's frustrating that I have to go at a slower pace (9.05) than him to have the same heart rate.

I'll keep doing what I'm doing because I like seeing the miles each week. And, I do think it'll pay off. :)

I've been learning alot about running lately and just want to do well in June.

The slower recovery is due to increase mileage, yes. But in 2-a-day running, use one of the runs as a "recovery" run and just run really easy. This helps improve your base running capabilities and will improve your performance for June. Don't get frustrated with the heart rate, you are different (obviously!) and should expect differences. What you want to see is improvement in your performance, not against someone else's.

Managed to do a 17+ run today.  I'm happy with being able to just do it.  Last 11/2 laps around the river were tough.  I get amazed at how others can do a full marathon in less time than it took me today.  :)    I'll chalk today up as another training run. I'm still learning.   Just keep thinking  - base miles, base miles......  I'll just keep going.

Be patient with your training and ramp your mileage slowly, it is tempting to blow it up when you feel great but set realistic increases of like 10-15% per week increases. I have a basic formula that better times come from more weekly mileage. It seems to hold true. If you get injured, don't run thru it, just stop. Don't over run your first marathon, just enjoy it. :)

Walked over lunch just to get outside.  Tired of sitting all day at work.  I don't know how some of my co-workers do no physical activity.  Drives me nuts.  I always find it interesting talking to people over and over again about doing something. There's always a reason why they haven't done anything or can't.  Glad I'm not like that! 

After work headed to the park for a run. Not a bad run. Didn't over do it. Nice to be outside!    Walked for another 20-30 minutes after running.

Pretty good run today. Had lots of errands to do before I could get out there and run.   Had to finish up the taxes and help my daughter get a school paper printed before her night class.  Taxes were easy.  Dealing with my stressed daughter was the hard one.  But, she made it on time.

Thank you. We've been working with Michael Hayes and I guess I over did it on Sunday. But,it was such a great day. Our miles have really been cut back, but that's what Michael has planned out for us. I enjoyed running around the river this morning.  It was great because my older sister recently started running. We'd gone down to the river together but ran separate.  It was great running into her along the way.

Was glad it was Sat.  Ran 7 at first and then needed to stop by my sisters for a few minutes.  We have company from Boise and were headed up to Island Park later that morning.   After talking to her I went and 3 1/2 more making it 10.5.  Was glad I could get a good run in because I knew we'd be busy for the rest of the weekend.

Ran up at the cabin this afternoon.   My watch stopped working shortly after I'd started the run. Ran up past Lakeside Lodge. Pretty warm since it was in the afternoon. But, it was nice.   I like running this route because there's some good inclines and hills.   Love getting up to the top.   Lots of boaters and 4-wheelers out! Good run.

Went into work today at 5am and worked until about 10:30am.   My son's in town and I wanted to spend most of the day with him. After I left work I went to Freeman Park and ran 6.25.  It was great because they were watering and their was some shade. Kept it alittle cooler than if I went around the main river path. After my run I met up with my son and went to lunch.  He competes in moutain biking in So. Calif so I always like hearing the advice he gives me.  

Overall I had a pretty good run.  Just didn't like when it warmed up.

Another day of 6.25 miles.  It was in the afternoon heat and it was a better run that I thought it would be.  It's been hectic doing morning runs now with work and my son visiting. But, I'm hoping things get back to normal.  

  I know I drive Marlin nuts with my running sometimes but I'm liking my running right now.  I haven't been doing speed work but I'm liking getting base miles in.  Best part of the day is when I'm out and get a good run in before work.

Well, I didn''t get up this morning to run because it'd been raining.  When I went after work it was windy!  Wish I would have gotten up to go in the AM.   Was glad I did the 7.5 miles.  The wind coming out of the south was a pain but, overall was happy with my pace.  Going up the hills with the wind I got down to a 9.35 mile pace.  But, kept it at a 8:20 - 8:35 mile pace otherwise.   Good run even with the wind.

AM run:    I was glad I went out and ran this morning.  It was just alittle cool, but I was dressed for it.  Didn't get cold at all.   I was short on time but still managed to do 6.25 miles.

PM run:  After work I went to Freeman Park and ran 4 miles.   Did some Fartlek work.  I was tired by the time I finished.   Was very glad to get some good miles in today.  I'm understanding the reasons behind running twice a day.

Managed to get in 7.25 this morning.  I think I got out the door right around 6am.   Cooler with alittle wind, but not to bad.  I only see a couple of cars each morning.   There are a couple of neighbors I see some mornings when I'm in my last mile.  I'm always glad to see them out walking.

AM run - 7 miles this morning.  Went out pretty early - 5:40am.  Pretty dark but, I managed.   Kinda strange being out that early.  It was nice being done before 6am though. 

PM run - 3 miles.  I'm going to call it a tempo run even though my pace varied depending on the incline.  Went anywhere from around a 8 min mile to a 9.35 min mile.  I'm trying to get used to running on tired legs.  Hope it pays off and gets easier.

Ran earlier today at 5am.   I wanted to get done earlier and try to get into work earlier.  It was  pretty dark so I wore my headlamp.  Felt like it was hard to get and maintain a good pace in the dark.  I got home before the sun even came up.   Since I had my headlamp on more dogs barked which I didn't like.  Kind of strange hearing an owner call for his dog while I was out running.  He must have been out working in the fields or getting his newspaper.   When cars pass me in the morning at that time I always wonder what they think of someone being out that early.  Crazy person!   I think tomorrow I'll actually go to work early and get off by 2pm.  Will try running in the afternoon to see how it goes.

Hi Burt, boy has it changed! I ran out by McKellips & Center. There was hardly anything out there back then. We'd take off and do 7 miles every morning. He was a marathor and I was just really starting to run. It was fun enter races with him. Needless to say he was so much better than I was, but, boy was it fun! How's your training going?

Right now I'm finishing up the P90X program, so my running has gone way down. Even still I've set a PR in the mile and the 5k recently.

A little north of Center and McKellips is still nothing because of the Indian Reservation, but most of that area has been subdivided, and of course they've built the freeway right over there.

I'm a believer. I really think that working the other parts of my body that running doesn't get, helped improve my overall performance as a runner. Does that make sense? Anyway, I think that once I'm done in a couple of weeks and can focus on running more, I should get a lot faster.

Managed to run 6 miles today. I've been having a reaction to something.  Might be new pillows I bought a couple of weeks ago. Anyway, went to the doc and found out can't do much right now except to take med.   Ran after seeing the doctor and took it easy.  Started by running around the river and headed over to Freeman Park because it was windy.  By the time I got back it was 6 miles.  Overall was happy with my pace.   Kept it between a 9 & 9 1/2 min mile.

Spending the weekend over in Boise.  My daughter came over to do the Womens Celebration Walk and I brought my mom over to see her great grand daughter and to see her sister.  We had to drive out past Boise to see her sister. Close to Onterio. While she spent time with her sister I took the chance to go for a run.  Talk about hills! Wish we had some of them out by my house.  Went 8 miles.  It was pretty warm but it was nice to be out running some place completely new.  After running we found this great fruit & veggie stand.  Couldn't believe how big the produce was.   Fun times!

Another warm day.  I worked later than I wanted to.  Meeting end of month quota's is a pain at times.  Spent some time at work today looking into transferring to another dept. Mainly because I've been doing this job for probably 3 yrs or so. 

After work didn't really feel like running.  But, I went to the river and was able to run 7.  I was alittle tired, but very glad I did it.  I'm not working tomorrow so I'm looking forward to sleeping in alittle - longer than 4 or 5am - getting a good run in with cooler weather.

I got myself to do a half-marathon this weekend - City of Trees.  Marlin had been training for the full and I knew I did not want to do that. It drove him nuts but I didn't decide to do the half until we were in Boise and he was picking up his packet. Even then I debated on what to do. He and I ran the San Diego Rock & Roll marathon and I completely blew that one!  So, I've been pretty hesitant about running any races.  I'd been pretty frustrated and since SD I just wanted to run and that was it.  I needed to regroup. But, we went to Boise for him to do the City of Trees and after some soul searching I decided to sign up for the half. I just wanted to be able to say I did it.

The half started out one hour later than the full and my biggest concern was it was going to be warm.  When it comes to running races I usually over hydrate by drinking to much.  But, I decided whatever happens happens. When it started I found some people I decided to pace with and once I was comfortable I decided to pick it up and move ahead.  I met a few people along the course with made it fun.   Once we got around mile 8 & 9 I was pretty happy with how I felt and knew I'd want to pick it up more towards the end.  I saw a couple of people I knew I wanted to pass up before it was over.  The last couple of miles I picked it up and was able to pass them.  There was a women I thought might be in my age group so I knew I wanted to get in front of her.  The last mile or so I saw that I might be able to get under 2 hrs which would be great for me because I hadn't been able to do that in other races. 

When I finished the announcer said 2 hours and some seconds. But, when I looked at the posting it showed 2:01. When we talked to them they said not all the chips had recorded at the start of the race.   Marlin and I were talking and we realized that I had actually started my watch before I'd crossed the start line.  So, we calculated where we both had started in the beginning of our races and how long it took to cross the start line.  We had started out at about the same place so we figured it was 13 seconds if we went off his watch. So, I'd have actually been under 2 hrs.  If any of that makes sense we figured my time was 1 hr 59 min & 57 seconds.

Congrats on running the race, overcoming the fears and hestitation to push yourself to a new PR! I am so happy that you had the mental and physical strength commit to it and succeed!

Hopefully this can give you confidence to try again at the marathon (this time with some better training than what was advised for RnR San Diego!).

Nice morning to run.  Went into the river early.  Didn't quite know how far I'd go when I started out. Quite a few people out which surprised me.  On my last lap I got caught up in a run/race. There wasn't a ton of runners & they were all women so I'm not sure who they were with.  I was glad to get a long run in to finish up the week.   Might be headed up to the cabin to get it closed up so I wanted a good run in just in case.

Woke up pretty early today - 4am.  Went to work by 5 to get off at 1:30pm. Went and ran down by the river.  Was alittle tired and it was alittle warm.  Took it easy doing my laps around the river.  When I had just finished my sister pulled up. She was running 1 lap so I went with her.  It was fun running with her and just talked sister stuff. When we were finished I saw that I had just .40 more miles to make it an even 9 miles so off I go to finish it.

I had also walked 1.25 miles on lunch just to get outside an enjoy the weather. Loving the weather!

I was alittle tired today after work. But, didn't want to miss running.  Took off by Best Western at the river and went north to go into Freeman Park.  Ran over there for a few loops and went back over to the main section of the greenbelt that most people do.  Went back down to Broadway and finished back where I started. What a month it's been.  I've ran to few of miles to even count this month!  I spent around a week and a half in Ariz helping my dad after he'd had open heart surgery.  The miracles of modern medicine.  He's 82 yrs old and been an exerciser pretty much his whole life.  As far back as I remember anyway.  He's living proof that working out pays off.  He's got a ways to make a full recovery tho.  I had  to put off working out because while I was down there we had 12 hr days at the hospital and once he was home someone had to be right there whenever he got out a chair,walked, ect.... 

This last week I was in Sacramento to watch my neice graduate from college. It was so hectic with so much family around I didn't get to work out much.

Now that I'm back home I really want to get back on track. Ran today 10 miles on the TM. Afterwords did a few weights. Felt good to get a good workout in!

Ran today on the TM.  Ended up doing 10 miles with a half of mile talking to Marlin when he got there.  Pretty good run. Expected to be more tired than I was after yesterday. Got off of work early today.  I acutally didn't have to go in at all, but I wanted to get a few things done.  Left around 10:15am.  It was nice going to the gym earlier!  Ended up doing 10 miles.  Every day once I reach 7 I keep telling myself - 'i'll stop in another half'.  Then once i get there I can't think of stopping until I get to the next mile.  Also, if I stop to walk to cool down I may walk for a minute or so and then pick it up to finish it out cuz it's driving me nuts to walk.  Sometimes I just do alittle extra...today I ended up going to 10.    Glad I did it because I sure didn't feel like running at mile 4.   Ran around a 9 mm.  Did a few arm weights and then situps to finish.  Hope it's a good day tomorrow.
